Comment on NXCOMPAT? by admin

As a followup, apparently even if the NXCOMPAT compiler switch is off, Vista will refuse to load legacy controls while DEP is set to "AlwaysOn".
You must disable DEP to get it to work:

To disable DEP in Vista:

1. Click Start
2. Click All Programs
3. Click Accessories
4. Right Click on Command Prompt
5. Left click on Run as Administrator
6. Click the Allow button if it asks you for permission
7. Type or copy and paste this into the command prompt window:

bcdedit.exe /set {current} nx AlwaysOff

8. Hit enter and you should see the confirmation: Operation Completed Successfully
9. Reboot and DEP should be off.

Also, according to Steven Cheng, Microsoft MSDN Online Support Lead:
As for the DEP setting, I think whether you mark the flag in your exe
image will not quite concerns to future compatibility(at least from the OS
DEP configuration's perspective). Because the DEP behavior is still mainly
controlled by the OS's DEP policy. If the system admin always turn on DEP,
even if you set it off in your exe, the application will still fail.

Comment on Why is Visual Studio 2008 so darn slow? by admin

So as a follow up: I found an update for Visual Studio 2008 at:

https://connect.microsoft.com/VisualStudio/Downloads/DownloadDetails.aspx?DownloadID=10826

that is also referenced here:

http://blogs.msdn.com/webdevtools/archive/2008/02/09/downloadable-hotfix-performance-and-editor-fixes-for-microsoft-visual-studio-2008-and-visual-web-developer-express-2008.aspx

The bottom line is that it didn't seem to help at all. I loaded a small .xslt file 7 minutes ago and VS is still unresponsive and "whited out" in Vista. I like .NET, but Microsoft really needs to address the slowness of their tool set.

OK. So as a follow up and in fairness to Google, they did lift the malware warning on my other site, but it took 5 days for them to review and clear it. In the meantime, my traffic took a big hit.
Thanks for lifting it, Google folks, but how about looking into the malware the bad guys are stuffing into You Tube videos your publishers are putting on their sites?
